Staples Woodcraft: Quality Handmade Traditional Furniture and Kitchens - Based in the North East of England

Situated in the ‘Land of the Prince Bishops’ and within ten minutes of Durham City at the gateway to Weardale you will find ‘Staples Woodcraft’ – a small and friendly family run business. We offer a wide range of traditional handmade bespoke furniture and framed kitchens in hardwoods from around the world.

The timber we use comes from managed woodlands where trees are felled on a carefully controlled basis; only mature wood is suitable for making fine furniture as it needs time to develop the character and enhanced grain that is essential to the finish of the final piece.

The felled trees are air dried as thick planks before the final kiln drying that ensure stability in today’s centrally heated homes.

Firstly we hand pick each board and remove any bark and sapwood, as only deeply grained and durable heartwood is suitable. The boards are then planed, cut to size and ready to create fine furniture.

We firmly believe that attention to detail is the key to producing quality handmade furniture and are proud to continue the methods that go back centuries using time honored mortise and tenons for frames, raised and fielded panels and dovetailed drawers. These are all signs of true craftsmanship.

Once the finished piece has created, a silhouette of a squirrel is individually hand crafted into each piece then carefully and meticulously it is hand polished, where each application must allowed time to dry before sanding down again in preparation for the next coat, this is the only way to produce a truly deep and lustrous finish that finally reveals the outstanding character of the wood.

To fully appreciate our furniture, a visit to our workshop and showroom is highly recommended.
